The Stroke Alliance for Europe (SAFE) is a non-profit coalition of European charities all connected with improving healthcare provided to stroke survivors. It represents a range of patient groups from across Europe whose mutual goal is to drive stroke prevention and awareness and promote prevention of stroke thro.
The goal is to drive stroke prevention up the European political agenda and prevent the incidence of stroke through education.
SAFE will ensure patient focus and perspective within VALIDATE. Stroke patients, individually, and conforming patient’s organizations (SAFE), will help to identify more outcomes to measure. SAFE will be crucial to identify and cover patient needs.
Moreover, SAFE will play a central role on disseminating results, educating patients and families and promoting an active patient/family involvement in behavioral changes towards health life habits (“Communication package”).

Arlene Wilkie

Arlene Wilkie, Director General of the Stroke Alliance for Europe (SAFE), has over 20 years of leadership experience in the UK charity sector. Throughout her career, she has championed research and health advocacy and policy, with a strong focus on improving healthcare outcomes. Arlene is known for her strategic vision and ability to build impactful partnerships, working closely with boards to develop and implement effective strategies that drive organisational goals.

At SAFE, Arlene has prioritised enhancing stroke care and support across Europe. She is a key figure in the Stroke Action Plan for Europe, a collaborative initiative aimed at reducing the prevalence and impact of stroke through better prevention, treatment and long-term care. Her work emphasises aligning policy and practice across diverse healthcare systems, with a particular focus on stroke support organisations, ensuring that people with lived experience of stroke receive the support they need to lead fulfilling lives.

Sandra Jackson

Previously working for the Stroke Association in the UK as PA to the Director of Services, Sandra has worked as the Secretariat for 18 years.  During this time the SAFE membership has grown from 10 to 35 member organisations.
